Rates of Spine Surgery Drop 25% in Western Michigan. Physiatry Evaluation Before Surgery Does the Trick

A study presented at the annual meeting of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine at Spine Week 2012 in Amsterdam revealed that patients in Western Michigan that were required by their insurance carrier to have an evaluation by a Physical Medicine doctor that specializes in pain management and back care reduced back surgery rates by a whopping 25%. There was an additional 48% reduction in surgical referrals, a 17% decrease in imaging studies and a 12% shrinkage in back care costs per insured patient. This is really a remarkable reduction in back surgeries in an area of the US that had one of the highest rates of surgery in the country. Physical Medicine doctors, also known as Physiatrists are particularly well suited to manage acute and chronic back pain from arthritis or a pinched nerve.
