This is a very good summary of a recent article published in The Lancet. Multiple studies were reviewed by the authors on the effectiveness of the treatment of chronic pain states. Most treatments show very little efficacy. Opioids, which are widely used, with an explosion in the prescribing of these drugs, have had very little impact on reducing pain and more importantly improving function. Furthermore, we now have a serious prescription drug problem in the U.S. as it relates to these painkillers.
